[Iron Man] Run for Your Life
This fanmix is based solely upon the events which take place in the Mask in the Iron Man arc in the Iron Man comic, published by Marvel. Basically, the gist of the storyline is that the armor Tony Stark (Iron Man) wears is struck by lightning and becomes sentient, and then falls in love with him and becomes the equivalent of an abusive boyfriend.

I tried to make this mix in the spirit of the Mask in the Iron Man arc: full of pure, mind-blowing crack, but still creepy and a little frightening.

a Living Armor/Tony Stark dramacrack mix

If you haven't read the story of Mask in the Iron Man by Joe Quesada... you need to. Even if you know absolutely nothing about Marvel at all, much less Iron Man, it's worth the read. You can read the entire story in one shot, or you can read the short sixteen page version posted on scans_daily. I'd highly recommend reading both, actually, because the witty commentary that accompanies the sixteen page version is just hilarious.

01 • Mr Roboto by Styx  [ LyricsDownload ]

This would be the Armor talking to Tony. It's alive, it's sentient, it has its own feelings now — Frankenstein's Monster, except with lasers. But it just wants to be loved and to help Tony be the bestest hero ever, so no worries. It all started out so innocently. Where did everything go wrong? You never should have played God, Tony!

I'm not a robot without emotions — I'm not what you see
I've come to help you with your problems, so we can be free
I'm not a hero, I'm not a saviour, forget what you know
I'm just a man whose circumstances went beyond his control
Beyond my control — we all need control
I need control — we all need control

02 • Every Breath You Take by Police  [ LyricsDownload ]

Things start getting a little creepier. The Armor loves Tony. The Armor wants Tony to see things its way. The Armor doesn't like letting Tony out of its sight. IT'S FOR YOUR OWN GOOD, TONY. WHY CAN'T YOU SEE THAT?

Oh, can't you see?
You belong to me
How my poor heart aches
With every step you take

Every move you make
Every vow you break
Every smile you fake
Every claim you stake

I'll be watching you

03 • Spiderwebs by No Doubt  [ LyricsDownload ]

The Armor brutally murders a villain, Whiplash, and shows absolutely no remorse, even after Tony takes it to Whiplash's funeral so the Armor can watch Whiplash's son sobbing over his daddy's coffin. The Armor says that it will prove Tony wrong about his crazy idea that killing people isn't the best way to do things. At this point, Tony is definitely like "Oh shit, son." The Armor says it loves you, Tony, but the bruises say otherwise. Don't they, Tony? Don't they?!

You think that we connect
That the chemistry's correct
Your words walk right through my ears
Presuming I like what I hear
And now I'm stuck in the
The web you're spinning
You've got me for your prey

04 • You Belong to Me by Carly Simon  [ LyricsDownload ]

Tony's would-be girlfriend, Rumiko, comes over to ask why Tony's being such a jerk and avoiding her. She confesses her love. Tony, being the smart man he is, says absolutely nothing in response to this and lets her run off crying. Mainly he does this because the Armor is standing right beside them both. Not that it's the Armor's fault Tony is a jerk to her. No, Tony could have said he loved her back. He could have. The Armor wouldn't have stopped him. It would have killed Rumiko, sure, but Tony was free to make that choice. See? It's not controlling you, Tony!

You belong to me
Can it be, honey, that you're not sure?
You belong to me
You belong — you belong — you belong to me
Tell her you were fooling
Tell her she don't even know you
Tell her you were fooling
I know you from a long time ago, baby
Don't leave me to go to her now
You belong to me

05 • Tainted Love by Soft Cell  [ LyricsDownload ]

In the ten seconds of free time Tony has while the Armor recharges itself, Tony runs off and puts on an older, non-sentient suit of armor. Ah, can't you just taste the irony? Tony relied completely on his Iron Man armor for so long, and now he's finding himself having to find a way to escape it. See, that's ironic. Irony. ...Get it? Quesada, man, I don't think they're getting it. Can you make it a little more blatant?

Once I ran to you (I ran)
Now I'll run from you
This tainted love you've given
I give you all a boy could give you
Take my tears and that's not nearly all
Tainted love

06 • Run for Your Life by The Beatles  [ LyricsDownload ]

The whole Tony-in-another-suit thing doesn't go over well, and the Armor proceeds to beat the crap out of Tony and then rip his armor and clothing off. It doesn't like hurting you, Tony. Do you think it enjoys hurting you? No, of course not. But when you do things like that, you make it go crazy. It loves you so much, you're so perfect for each other, it just can't stand seeing you with some other armor.

Well, you know that I'm a wicked guy
And I was born with a jealous mind
And I can't spend my whole life
Trying just to make you toe the line
Let this be a sermon
I mean everything I've said
Baby, I'm determined
And I'd rather see you dead
I'd rather see you dead, little girl
Than to be with another man
You better keep your head, little girl
Or you won't know where I am

07 • All Mine by Portishead  [ LyricsDownload ]

The Armor drags Tony off to a previously-radioactive island that Tony's dad bought way back when. You know, before he died. Anyway, the Armor dumps Tony onto the ground and tells him, "You either learn to be totally mine, or I leave here alone." Then it ties him to a tree and tortures him. But really, it's only because Tony doesn't return its feelings. How could you be so callous, Tony? But don't worry, it'll make you change your mind. It's all for love, Tony. It's all for love.

Make no mistake
You shan't escape
Tethered and tied
There's nowhere to hide from me

All mine
You have to be

Don't resist
We shall exist
Until the day I die
Until the day I die

All mine
You have to be

08 • Eraser by Nine Inch Nails  [ LyricsDownload ]

Tony's heart, of course, has never been all that reliable. Well, actually, considering he was tied to a tree and then starved, dehydrated, tortured... and then managed to get loose, set up traps, and make an all-out last-stand assault on an armor built to withstand everything up to and including your average nuclear explosion, his heart is probably more reliable than mine. But in any case, right when the Armor is about to kill him, Tony suffers a massive heart attack. The Armor implores Tony to get inside it(!) so that the Armor can help him survive. Tony says the Armor can shove that shit up its shiny metal ass. He is going to die a free man! BETTER TO DIE STANDING THAN LIVE ON YOUR KNEES.

But the Armor rips out its own metal heart and inserts the wires into Tony's chest, which freaks Tony the fuck out, but essentially it takes over for Tony's real heart and stops the heart attack. The Armor is dying, of course, and despite everything that's happened between them, true love conquers all: Tony begs the Armor not to die, and promises he can fix it, but the Armor wishes to die like a man. LIKE A HERO.

It dies. Tony is sad, and gives it the best burial he can, including a grave marker that names the Armor an Avenger. Don't worry, sweetheart, with time and therapy you'll come to understand the effects of Stockholm Syndrome.

Need you
Dream you
Find you
Taste you
Fuck you
Use you
Scar you
Break you
Lose me
Hate me
Smash me
Erase me
Kill me

And finally, two songs that pretty much perfectly describe Tony and the Armor's wonderful, completely non-abusive relationship.

09 • I Put a Spell On You by Screamin' Jay Hawkins  [ LyricsDownload ]

In all seriousness, I think this song suits the tone of Mask in the Iron Man insanely well. It's funny, and strange, but it's also very dark and twisted. The music, as well as the sound and power of Hawkins' voice, are both extremely creepy.

I put a spell on you
Because you're mine
Stop the things you do
Watch out, I ain't lying

I love you, I love you
I love you anyhow
I don't care if you don't want me
I'm yours right now

I put a spell on you
Because you're mine

10 • Obsession by Animotion  [ LyricsDownload ]

Okay, so this is basically their theme song.

You are an obsession
I cannot sleep
I am your possession
Unopened at your feet
There's no balance
No equality
Be still, I will not accept defeat
I feed you, I drink you
My day and my night
I need you, I need you
By sun or candlelight
You protest
You want to leave
Oh, there's no alternative
My fantasy has turned to madness
And all my goodness
Has turned to badness
My need to possess you
Has consumed my soul
My life is trembling
I have no control

I will have you
Yes, I will have you
I will find a way and I will have you
Like a butterfly
A wild butterfly
I will collect you and capture you

*cackles with laughter* Their not abusive, no not at all love will live forever!

I also nominate "He hit me, and it felt like a kiss" by the Crystals as a good theme song, because they sound so perky while singing about domestic abuse.

Don't worry, sweetheart, with time and therapy you'll come to understand the effects of Stockholm Syndrome

You'd think he'd have learned all about that back in the day, when his creepy stalker girlfriend Kathy shot him and left him to die for talking to another woman (is it just me, or is a pattern starting to emerge here in your relationships, Tony?).
Alena: no silence herenosilencehere on April 8th, 2007 12:41 am (UTC)
The lyrics to that song are disturbingly hilarious. I don't know whether to take it seriously or not. Do you have the mp3 for it (if you're willing to share)? Because I really can't seem to find it anywhere.

Tony's love life is basically one disaster after another1. I think it's time for him to just throw in the towel and accept that he isn't allowed to have a happy relationship. What, did you think you were special, Tony? Did you think that you were so much better than every other character that you could get away with having a stable love interest for very long?

Honestly, he might as well tell Armor to come back. I mean, it won't be any less healthy or stable than any other relationship he might get into, and at least it'll be a consistent level of angst.

1 Although I heartily approved of Rumiko, and was very disappointed when she cheated on him. But she did win him back his company, so it's not like she was without remorse. And then they had to go and kill her off. Damnit, Marvel!
Elspethelspethdixon on April 9th, 2007 04:41 pm (UTC)
Sadly, no. I heard it on the radio once (oldies station), and it has remained burned in my mind forever (along with that song about the guy dictating a letter to his secretary wherein he's divorcing his wife).

Right now, the most important relationship in Tony's life is Tony/Guilt-over-Cap's-death. I'm sure Tony/Technology-that-wants-to-molest-him will eventually resume front stage again, though. (Actually, if you count the Ultron thing in Mighty Avengers, it may already have).
...: goddamnit tony I still love you. assholefire_tears on April 13th, 2007 02:45 am (UTC)
I'm ignoring Civil War until they reveal that the Tony in that arc is actually a demented clone. Either that, or a retcon in which Civil War is made into another one of Marvel's alternate universes.

I won't hold my breath. >(

One of the great mysteries of the Marvel U. will forever be, what drug was Tony fed that could possibly prompt him to leave his armor lying around unattended? Because that must be some seriously great stuff. There was (of course) a follow-up arc to this not too long after, where somebody digs up the buried armor and things go poorly (but sadly, it turns out not to really be the Armor anymore...except possibly for one inexplicable sequence at the end of the arc).

You know, the more I read of Iron Man, the more I seriously suspect Tony of being masochistic. Or maybe it's just the writers who are secretly kinky. But Stark finds himself in more of these weird control/possession scenarios...just scope out some of the story arcs with the Controller, Ty Stone, or any of the 17,235,467 people who want to call dibs on him for his mighty brains.

But it's okay, Tony, the armor will protect you!
Alena: no silence herenosilencehere on April 8th, 2007 12:16 am (UTC)
See, I'm chalking it up not to drugs, but to Tony's secret desire to see the Armor again.

What I really want to know is why the hell everyone let him leave it there. I'll admit, I haven't been able to get my hands on the issues that came directly after that, but honestly.

"So, you were held captive for a week by a sentient version of your armor."
"Pretty much."
"And then it sacrificed itself to save you."
"And you buried it on the island. And left it there. Unattended. For anyone to find. In complete opposition of your obsessive need to never let anyone get their hands on your Iron Man technology ever."
"...Want to go get coffee?"
"Sounds good."

Poor Armor, though. What was the sequence that made it seem more like Armor than Ultron?

I blame the writers. And Tony's sexin' moustache. And his technophilia. Of course, maybe he's hoping that all the people who want to own him will cancel each other out. Although the Armor would be the perfect one to call in any case of Tony being kidnapped and/or otherwise manipulated.

"Armor, I heard that Controller is trying to control Tony's mind to make him fire Iron Man. Hey, that's Controller right over there! ...Armor?"

I...uh. Wow. I had no idea Marvel had such awesome, interesting things going on in the comics. And it took them how long to give us Wolverine/Rogue? Ooooo-kay. But yes.

Snagging (hopefully, MU hates me with a passion and never works.), and definitely reading the accompanying literature, because it just sounds so dang intriguing. Also, your interpretations of the songs are pure gold. I cannot wait to read the full story behind what happens, seriously.

Alena: no silence herenosilencehere on April 7th, 2007 11:37 pm (UTC)
Well, if it doesn't, I've uploaded the .zip to sendspace for those who don't like/can't download from megaupload. Here's the link.

And yes, you definitely need to read the story. It's... something else, it really is. I spent a lot of it going, "They published this?!" because if it had been between two humans, it would have been pretty much the epitome of an abusive relationship.

The scene where the Armor tears all of Tony's armor and most of his clothing off while yelling "You're mine, Tony! MINE! MINE!!" was very special.

So really, I didn't take much liberty with my interpretations of things. XD The comic did most of that for me.

If you wouldn't mind, could you tell me what you think of it when you're done reading? I really don't have enough comic-loving friends with whom to share the absolutely WTFery of this. =D
Angie: (XM) Wolverine - oldie but goodiecynnabug on April 11th, 2007 06:57 am (UTC)
Oh, thank you! (I finished reading a couple days ago, but then had major computer trouble.)

I read it, and just...wow. Between the BDSM dude and the suit, it was just full of the weirdest crack I've ever read. (Unless the bondage-guy was a regular, in which case no words.)

The scene where the Armor tears all of Tony's armor and most of his clothing off while yelling "You're mine, Tony! MINE! MINE!!" was very special.
- *snickers* If nothing else, it was that. *g* While reading it, my jaw was dropped most of the time, but the rest of it I giggled. That might've been one of the times I giggled. (Weird reaction, but I tend to react to things I can't fully believe are happening, by giggling.)

I really don't have enough comic-loving friends with whom to share the absolutely WTFery of this. =D
- I know the feeling. *g* I'm not much of a comic book reader myself at the moment, but after reading this I will definitely be looking into them. Even if not all of what I read is WTF-worthy, it'll still be worth the read.

This might be a hard question or a long-shot, considering how many years of comics there are, but any ideas of where I could start? Or do you basically just pick who you want to read about, and go from there?

re: Tony's demented clone
I am convinced that he's actually a demented clone who has the real Tony locked up somewhere.

Fanfic plz? This is a thread about the time Tony's sentient armor became his abusive boyfriend...

Perhaps it started with Tony cloning himself in case he got assassinated...

Brilliant, isn't it? I still can't believe they let Quesada even pitch the damn thing, much less publish it and make it canon.
